One of my fond memories of Laurelledge is hunting for chinquapins in the fall. I cannot tell you where most of the bushes were, but I do remember one on the other side of the road just up from the mailbox. It was not very large, and only yielded a few chinquapin nuts each fall, but they were a sweet treat nonetheless. Miniature chestnuts, free for the taking.
Just thinking of them makes me want to try to plant a few here, just so I can savor the treats at harvest time.

i have never heard of chinquapins before? i find that strange.
Thomas Ed, I remember that tree. I watched it each fall but never saw any nuts that I thought were worth climbing the bank to get. You remember, there was a steep bank at that point along side of the road.
Signed Dad
Yes, I remember the bank. That is why there were some nuts for me - it was too steep for you!
